Digital Painting on the Net

by Admin 5/4/2008 5:58:00 AM

I am amazed at how many terrific sites for artists I keep stumbling upon as I surf the internet. These are some of my favorites.

DeviantArt.com

deviantart

deviantArt has so many over-talented artists that I quickly lose count. I really enjoy the eye candy here, it is both humbling and inspirational at the same time :-) Definitely one of the go to spots for many artist on the internet. Some of my favorites.

Pixelbrush

pixelbrush

From the creators of the Pixelbrush site: "We simply want this place to be a nice and fun place to hang out, and also a place for artists to seek help or to contribute by sharing their art and knowledge." -Henning and Tascha

ImagineFX.com

imaginefx

ImagineFX is a digital fantasy art magazine, but their site is a melting pot for a lot of great artists and tutorials.

CGSociety

cgsociety

CGSociety.org is another popular site for artists. Also has some great tutorials and galleries.

NeonDragonArt

Neon Dragon Art

NeonDragonArt.com is an art collective created and administrated by J "NeonDragon" Peffer. The focus of the site is to share my art with the online community, as well as to create an comfortable environment for other artists and fantasy enthusiasts.

ConceptArt.org

ConceptArt.org describes themselves as: "a web community of artists who are here for one purpose. We want to help each other learn about art, provide the best place to showcase work, further our art educations, and to meet other artists from around the world."

Colourlovers

colourlovers-fight-for-the-love-in-color-revolution is a nifty place where you can create your own palettes and share them with other members. It is inspiring to browse all of these palettes with really dramatic names. Great site if you have trouble coordinating like me.

Linesandcolours.com

Here is another great site for illustration and painting. From the editor: "lines and colors is a blog about drawing, sketching, painting, comics, cartoons, webcomics, illustration, digital art, concept art, gallery art, artist tools and techniques, motion graphics, animation, sci-fi and fantasy illustration, paleo art, storyboards, matte painting, 3d graphics and anything else I find visually interesting. If it has lines and/or colors, it's fair game."

Worth1000.com

I heard about Worth1000 a while back, but never visited until today. Wow! Did I miss out. The contests here are a lot of fun and the competition can get pretty stiff. The best place to start browsing is via the gallery.

Digital Painting Resources

by Admin 5/4/2008 5:56:00 AM

A collection of digital art galleries, portfolios and tutorials that are sure to amaze and inspire ^_^

Painting in Photoshop

I have been using Corel Painter for a little while now, and while I love using the myriad of brushes, I still wanted to learn the basics of digital painting with Adobe Photoshop. There are so many wonderful paintings on the net that have been created in PS, I knew I must be missing something! CGSociety saves the day once again with this great tutorial on painting with the simpler brushes that PS offers and a lot of practical tips. There is lots of great info on choosing and setting your brushes and how to use the smudge tool effectively as well.

Justin Gerard

  Justin Gerard

Jusin Gerard has some really nice digital pieces in his gallery. You can find more stuff at portlandstudios.com, as well, which is a wonderfully refreshing, flash-based website.

Wow, great Flash site! Robin Kachantones is a professional illustrator and teacher from Houston. There are some really nice vector style illustrations of celebrities that you don't want to miss.

Feng Zhu

Feng Zhu

Concept artist extraordinaire Feng Zhu's site. The gallery is really a must see, but you should also read his comments on CGTalk too. A lot of interesting observations on the nature of what it means to be a concept artist and to succeed in the industry in general.

StartDrawing.org

Startdrawing.org is a web resource portal for Asia's artists and drawings. They have a great list of links on the main page too!

Dave King

Michael Kutsche

Michel Gagné

Michel Gagné

Canadian illustrator and animation artist Michel Gagné has put together a great website showing many of his illustrations and even some animations. I was particularly interested in his Photoshop illustrations for XEKO - where he combines photographic textures and shapes with traditional illustration. Take a look at his gallery if you haven't already.

Linda Bergkvist

Linda Bergkvist

This amazing artist (What do you mean, you haven't seen her gallery yet?) teaches you about painting realistic eyes and realistic hair at CGSociety.org. Pick up more tutorials from her site.

NeonDragonArt

Neon Dragon Art

The book on DragonArt is great, but meanwhile you can check out Jessica Peffer's other tutorials here. It pays to visit her gallery at DA too.

Henning Ludvigsen

Henning Ludvigsen

Long time artist Henning Ludvigsen has written many digital painting tutorials at ImageFX. Even better, he has them conveniently listed all in one place at his main site! Be sure to take a look at his gallery, too.

Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings

I found this little piece of nostalgia about Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings on Wikipedia. Apparently, there is a new version now airing in Canada. Pictures of the show can be found at http://simontdd.tripod.com/SimonLOCD/simon.html Have fun!

Drawn.ca

Drawn.ca delivers fascinating articles about new trends in illustration and links to artists on the web.

McFarlane Toys

Spawn.com - Twisted Land of Oz

McFarlane Toys produces unique action-figures-slash-sculptures for the discerning geek in all of us. They have a some truly great pieces in the HORROR, FANTASY AND SCI-FI section of their site. Moreover, instead of simply placing their figures on a white background, they show them in a variety of settings and lighting conditions. Anyone illustrates within this genre would do well to take a look at McFarlane's Dragons Series One, Series Two and Series Three - Quest for the Lost King, as well as the subsequent Series Four, Series Five and upcoming Series Six - The Fall of the Dragon Kingdom. More photos are also available at the main HORROR, FANTASY AND SCI-FI section of their site. Be sure to also check out the Giger, Clive Barker's Tortured Souls and especially the Twisted Land of Oz.
